Comprehensive assessment of Karatedo practitioners’ capabilities

On September 6, 2026, the Ho Chi Minh City Karatedo Federation (HKF) held its third Karatedo Black Belt Examination and Examiner Classification Session of 2026 in Dong Thanh.

The examination was an important professional activity in HKF’s training and assessment work, ensuring that dan promotion and examiner classification are carried out on the basis of actual competence, professional knowledge and the ability to apply Karatedo technical standards.

For the black belt examination, practitioners completed a progression of assessments from basic to advanced, including required and elective Kata; Kihon; Jiyu Ippon Kumite; Kaeshi Kumite; Okuri Kumite; combination techniques prescribed for the dan grade sought; competitive sparring; physical-fitness testing; and refereeing skills.

These components assessed candidates not only on their ability to perform individual techniques, but also on coordination, reactions, the ability to apply techniques in practical situations, physical fitness and their understanding of Karatedo competition.

Higher ranks require more comprehensive capabilities

In addition to practical assessments, theoretical knowledge requirements increase in line with each practitioner’s dan grade.

For candidates sitting for 4th dan and above, one compulsory requirement is a theoretical essay. This component assesses their ability to systematise knowledge, professional thinking and depth of understanding of Karatedo, rather than focusing solely on physical skills.

This approach reflects HKF’s consistent training philosophy: black belt level is determined not only by technical execution, but also by knowledge, experience, discipline and the ability to convey the values of Karatedo.

Standardising the examiner corps

Alongside the black belt examination, HKF organised examiner classification to further standardise the technical personnel serving examinations and belt and dan assessment activities.

Under the examination requirements, practitioners applying for examiner classification must hold a black belt of 2nd dan or above.

Candidates underwent multiple assessment components, including a multiple-choice test of examiner knowledge, Kata practice and kata analysis, and an oral examination on assessment work at basic, intermediate or advanced levels.

This is a particularly important stage, as the quality of an examination depends not only on the candidates’ standard but also on accuracy, consistency and objectivity in the assessment process.

The black belt examination and examiner classification are more than an assessment process for rank recognition. Through preparation and assessment, practitioners have the opportunity to review their entire training journey, identify their strengths and recognise areas requiring further improvement.

For coaches and examiners, this is also an opportunity to align professional requirements, assessment methods and technical standards across the Ho Chi Minh City Karatedo system.

Maintaining examinations with increasingly comprehensive requirements contributes to a progressive training system in which each dan grade is accompanied by growth in technique, fitness, knowledge and professional responsibility.
